When you just don’t feel like it.

When you just don’t feel like it.

So, today I went to the studio early to get a jump start on the day. I finished the older boy’s left ear in a flash, and then moved down to start on the boys’ arms and legs. Early into it, I lost my mojo. Just didn’t feel like painting arms and legs. I mean, aren’t there days when you just don’t feel like doing the dishes? Yeah. That’s how it was.

So I did what any self-respecting artist would do… I grabbed a huge brush and painted the background.

Question for all (two) of you:

What do you think of the color?

First, love the color and how it changes from (viewer) left to (viewer) right. Esp love the floor. You COULD do what someone related to me does, and just leave their hands and feet sort of impressionistic-ish, except I know you don’t do that.

Thanks, KP. Yep, I can’t leave their bodies as loose as your mom does – that takes REAL talent to do. It’s much easier to paint every little detail than to know what to leave to chance… that requires real skill that I don’t have, but keep trying to learn.

When I first looked at this a while ago I was struck by the maturity in the older boy’s face and the guardianship he seems to be expressing with his arm around the younger child’s shoulders.

    Their personalities shine through.

I like that idea about the lower parts “melting” impressionistically into the floor.

I think the white works BUT I also think you wouldn’t be asking if you weren’t thinking it might not.

I like how the light appears to come from the left in the background but then when you look at your shadows it looks like it’s on the right.

Not sure that it really matters.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the dark blue (I wonder why?) and the white.

The white works w/ the white in the boys’ shirts.
What other color would you use?

Hi Maureen! Thanks for looking, and commenting. I was wondering whether the color is too “feminine” – it’s hard to see in the photo but’s its a sort of bluish-greish-lilacish color.

As to the light – the light IS coming from the right – that’s why the background on the right is in shadow and the left is lit – when light is coming FROM one side that side is usually darker than the side where the light is shining.

I am going to keep the bodies rather loose. I want the boys’ faces to be the star of this painting.

What you have to keep in mind is everyone’s browsers display differently – I don’t see the colors you mention – it looks whitish to grey to me (going from left to right.)

    Still, it’s wonderful.
